Janell Monae at the 2012 Movie Awards

“Do I get stress headaches at work? Yes, definitely. From the moment I get in, it’s “Denise we need this! Denise we need that!” Which is stressful… ‘cause my name is Linda. Denise is the other black woman that works here. By 10am, someone in the copy room makes a joke about Kobe Bryant, and everyone looks at me to make sure it’s ok. And I smile like it’s ok. But really, my head and neck are starting to throb. Then I spend the rest of my afternoon training my interns, and answering their questions, like, “Yes, black people use shampoo”, and, “No, I don’t know any good reggae clubs around here”, and, “Yes, Condoleezza Rice is very articulate, why do you sound so surprised?” And, “No, I can’t tell you where to buy weed!” And that’s when I reach for Excedrin.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. MY LIFE.

Bloomberg, Dickberg.

I really wish Mayor Mike Bloomberg would fight for animal abuse, afterschool budgets and the awful shelter system with the same anger he directs towards soft drinks.

I agree.  It’s so difficult as a young person to give a shit about politics, when all it is to the people in power is a big game.  This man has so much ability to make real changes in systems that actually matter in my community, and this is the fight he wants to take on.  The amount of cuts the New York City education system endured while I was a part of it, was ridiculous.  Nothing that seems to matter to these high up politicians in ever top of the list.  Instead of eliminating the biggest soda size, how about creating laws against how many fucking fast food restaurants can exist within one square mile of the poorest neighborhoods!  But why think that way?  That might actually lead to doing something that matters…

Hopefully, if I practice everyday until teacher training, my muscles will come be completely out of atrophy by the time it begins, and I won’t die in the first week.

I already feel better.

Ithaca is a weird fairytale place…

I’m really enjoying being here during the summer.  Playing house with JP and enjoying the interesting little family we’ve created amongst all the people that live in this apartment now. The weather is beautiful, and our schedules are more than wide open.  As much as I miss the city, part of me is truly sad I won’t be able to stay the entire summer, and I’ll have to leave in just a couple weeks.  Until then though, I’m just enjoying myself.  I haven’t felt this free of stress in SO long.  As much as I love my family and my dog, going home sends my blood pressure through the roof.  Thank god for teacher training, because  I have a serious feeling that home this summer, isn’t where I’m going to want to be…

Today the most productive thing we did was go downtown to watch the parade for Ithacafest.  It was long and silly, and just nice.  The townies are fucking ridiculous, but that’s what gives this place its charm.  Our mayor is 25, and just gave up his car so he could turn his city parking space into a mini public park!  That’s just awesome.  I swear, in the summer when you can really take it in, Ithaca is just unreal.  It’s almost like a tiny slice of NYC, minus the neurosis and triple the LSD.

It’s strange.  After 3 years of living here, I finally feel at home.

I’ve seen a ton on the facebooks about “thanking veterans for their service.” As a veteran let me just be very straightforward and honest with you. We didn’t “serve our country”; we don’t actually serve our brothers/sisters or our neighbors. We serve the interests of Capital. We never risked our lives or spent months on deployment away from our family and friends so they can have this abstract concept called “freedom”. We served big oil; big coal; Coca-Cola; Kellogg, Brown, and Root and all the other big Capital interests who don’t know a fucking thing about sacrifice. These people will never have to deal with the loss of a loved one or the physical and/or psychological scars that those who “serve”, and their families, have to deal with for the rest of their lives. The most patriotic thing someone can do is to tell truth to power and dedicate yourself to building power to overthrow these sociopathic assholes. I served with some of the most real and genuine people I’ve ever met. You’ll never see solidarity like the kind of solidarity you experience when your life depends on the person next to you. But most of us didn’t join for that; we joined because we were fucking poor and didn’t have many other options.
